Dictate anywhere you can type
Yap sits in the menu bar and floats a small pill while you talk. Editor, terminal, browser, chat — if there is a text field, Yap can fill it.
Press and hold fn
The pill appears at the edge of the screen and starts listening, and Yap mutes the rest of your Mac so nothing plays over you. Prefer hands-free? Tap once to start, tap again to stop.
Speak like a person
Your audio runs through noise suppression and voice isolation into a Whisper model on your Mac's own GPU. There is no upload step, because there is nothing to upload to.
The text lands at your cursor
Punctuation, lists and “wait, no” self-corrections are handled on the way out, and Yap pastes only into the app you dictated into. Not what you meant? Undo the edit and paste the raw take.

Never lose a dictation
A crash-safe journal records each take as it happens, and every take is saved in one transaction. If Yap dies mid-sentence the words are still there when it comes back, and a failed take can be retried from the toast or from History.
Yappy watches you work
The floating pill is a live scene, not a spinner. Yappy reacts to what you are actually saying and escalates from a notepad to a whole desk as the take gets longer. Drag the pill to dock it at any screen edge.
Command mode
Select some text and say the edit out loud. The commands are deterministic and local — no round trip, no model guessing at what you meant by “make that a list”.
Snippets
Speak a trigger phrase and get the saved text: an address, boilerplate, the command you can never remember. Stored on your Mac, expanded on your Mac.
It learns your words
Correct a transcript once and the dictionary keeps the correction. Starred terms bias the recognizer directly, so names, jargon and spellings stop coming back wrong.
Native engine, no sidecar
Transcription runs on an embedded GGUF/Metal Whisper engine built into the app. No Python to install, no API key, no account. After the one-time model download, Yap works with the Wi-Fi off.
It works on a plane
That is the shortest proof we have. Switch off the Wi-Fi at 35,000 feet and Yap keeps transcribing, because there is no server at the other end of it. Not a fast one, not a private one — not one at all.
